What do you feel upon achieving a goal? What thoughts cross your mind after that brief moment of perfect happiness you feel immediately after realizing you did it?
The need to lose weight has been a constant in my life...never has been a moment, as far as I can remember, in which I felt fine with my exterior. I've never been obsessed with diets, no way, but my discomfort has always been there, in the background like chillout music but there nonetheless. In the past few days I achieved two goals that made me think a lot, not really because of the importance of the target, more because of my reactions...but let's start from the beginning!
After completing stage one of my diet (three months, almost twenty Kilos shed from 123 to 104 Kilos more or less) I undertook the venture, never attempted in the last twenty years, of giving some stability to the weight just reached; I managed to do that, quite effortlessly, notwithstanding a daily calories intake (2500 Kcal/day) quite under average for a guy my age, size and activity. So, after a month and a half of stable weight (even decreasing, a bit), I started dieting again in October, once again without a target weight, just trying to follow my regimen the best I could. Shortly afterwards, new blood tests confirmed hypothyroidism so I had to start a theraphy with Eutirox (half a 75mcg capsule for the first three weeks, a full one afterwards). In the first three weeks I lost three Kilos more or less and, upon coming back from Luccacomics, the fourth weigh in was scheduled: the evening before I tried on (as I did a number of times during stage 1) a pair of Dockers jeans, size 36, that I hadn't put on in exactly ten years due to a sudden weight gain during university; to my surprise, they fitted perfectly! This simple achievement put me in such high spirits I didn't quite expect...I didn't sleep a bit at night and, in the morning, the scale presented me with another satisfying result weighing me in at 98,1 Kg. After that, I simply went crazy, the 100 Kilos threshold has always been significant to me, quite a symbol of the adult life as I crossed that line during my first university year; breaking that levee, standing strong from 1999, injected even more euphory in me, I told everybody, I even took a photo of the scale, thanked a lot of people that supported me during this route...a shower of pure joy, really. And then...when euphory was finally gone I didn't feel empty at all...the achievements gave me new strength to go on with diet and I also immediately felt the need to set a new target...at least a new feasible one!

Stage 1: CLEARED!
Just like a videogame...the diet videogame :)
Three months have passed since last post: at that time I felt defeated, let down by myself and on the verge of trying, for the nth time, to change my life. Today I can say I made a little step ahead thanks to a banal yet decisive strategy change: I started thinking about diet as something limited in time, not related to a specific weight target but only to a constant effort. I gave myself three months time, my only commitment being not to falter and immediately recover from a lapse, if any: it worked, having a visible, relatively at hand target helped me keep going for all three months despite various sorties in "hostile" environments (two long weekends in London, one in Baia Domizia and one in Prague - all stages of the A-run-a-town world tour) eventually shedding around 19 Kilos (from 123,2 to 104,4 Kilos).
While coming close to reaching the target I started thinking about my next moves and realized that I never really thought (not in the last ten years or more) about eating habits able to make me keep my weight...in other words, I don't know what my daily calories intake should be, given that it might have changed since I crossed the thirty years of age line (I obviously estimated it using various different formulas but that's just a good starting point). Therefore, stage 2 of the videogame will be a month and a half (from now till the end of September) during which I will try to understand how and what to eat to keep my weight constant, given my current lifestyle.

Of defeat, depression and failure
This will be a hard post to share...in short, all went downhill. Since Luccacomics, my diet motivation started to falter a bit: I wasn't able to control myself as much as I wanted when I was there so I started losing my grip. I was able to continue losing weight till the end of November (coming to 103,9 Kilos) but, since December, I didn't succeed in going on anymore. From January on the big issue was that I totally failed the main target, that was to keep my weight stable by continuing to eat with some discipline; therefore, now, I'm back to square one.
With cold weather I also stopped running even though I kept on playing tennis...since passing "dying man test" (10 Km in 57 minutes) in November, I only ran three times in 2011.
The quake on March 11th forced me to cancel my trip to Japan. Notwithstanding all the nuclear alerts and scaremongerings I would have gone anyway but I couldn't stand the thought of being a tourist in a country having such a big crisis going on. So, eventually, we changed our destination, choosing to go on a round Florida trip by car; it was good to see the much dreamed America for the first time but, in the back of my mind, I wasn't able to free myself from the feeling I shouldn't have been there.
Even at work I had some problems, nothing bad but a bit demotivating nonetheless.
So, here I am, just turned 37 and on the verge of trying, for the nth time, to change my life.

Weight update nr. 5
I'm now 105,2 Kg, 1,3 Kg less than last week. It's good but, honestly, I thought it was better, considering the "youth" of these kilos (I weighed at 101,9 Kg in August 2009). Anyway, weight loss is going faster than I thought it would last August, I hope I'll break 100 Kg at the end of November.

Weight update nr. 4
I'm now 106,5 Kg, 1,1 Kg less than last week. It's ok, considering that I went a little offroad with my diet. Still, I desperately need a endocrinologist because blood test are not exactly coherent...

Weight update nr. 3

Tomorrow I will have the blood test results for hypothyroidism and I'll take a cardiological examination. Bad weather is finally here, it will be harder to run now but it also will be more frequent as I'll be able to play tennis less often :(

Weight update nr. 2
Yesterday I weighed myself, like every Wednesday...it went well this week too, I'm now 109,2 kilos, 2,3 kilos less than last week; hope this trend will go on at least until I lose these "young" kilos.
Furthermore, early in the morning, I finally managed to have blood samples taken for the new tests.

Blogger without a cause
Lately, looking for inspiration (or else, trying to keep it alive), I browsed several blog run by overweight people; in particular, I avidly read the one by Ben Davis, that I found via a YouTube video posted on Repubblica.it. Ben, and many like him such as John Stone author and star of the famous 365 days of exercise, started his blog when he decided to change his life and constantly registered his progress in "doing life". One thing he often repeats, in giving advices to many people that, like him, want to steer clear from their bad lifes, is to inform as many people as possible about their plans to have support and to feel that extra guilt complex when they know they are not keeping up with their resolutions. I'm not, on the contrary, so keen on sharing such things (but it might be my nature, urging me to share very little, in general) and I prefer to search for the strength to keep going just inside of me. That said, I thought I might at least share my progresses (or lack thereof), to celebrate or be pissed depending on the situation. So, to whom it may concern: I started dieting on August 18th, 2010 and I weighed 123,7 Kg; now, after 5 weeks, my weight is 113,2 Kg. Minimum target is to get to 100 Kg (I'm 1,78 meters tall). Just so you know: I did sport for most of my life but when I started this diet I also started running (see previous post).

Alive and kicking
Once more, long time has passed since the last post...browsing old ones I noticed that in the beginning I used to write many short posts, like flash news while now I'm forced to write long "poems" to recall what happened in many months of absence. The last months of Spring saw me incapable of continuing dieting, a trend that went on during Summer resulting in me succeeding in gaining approximately 15 Kilos, from the beginning of the year to mid August!
From July 11th to July 18th I went to the Tennis Village, this time in Sardinia but, even though I enjoyed it, I must admit it hasn't been as fun as in the past years.
From July 29th to August 1st I finally went back to London, spending a whole lot of money for the flight...we saw Legally Blonde, Luigi enjoyed it very much while I wasn't that impressed but, at least, we managed to spend an evening with Manuela, Chiara, Simonetta and Andrea.
On August 8th I went to Castel di Sangro to spend a week there, by myself initially, then Enzo and Angela with their baby joined me. Luigi was supposed to join too for the weekend but he backed away at the last minute.
Back from the holidays, at last, I resumed dieting and, trying to speed up the results, I also started running; I started doing 30 minutes jogging, using a Nokia app called Sports Tracker that allows to get all running data from the built-in GPS in my Nokia 5800. Running still bores me to death but this app is so cool that I decided I will use it also when I travel: wherever I spend the night, I will run, trying to add more and more cities to what I called "A-run-a-town world tour" ;) During the first 5 weeks, I raised running time to 35 and then to 40 minutes losing approximately 7 Kilos (from 123 to 116 Kilos).
On August 27th I went to Campoformido, near Udine, to meet Laura and her baby Johnny (as I immediately renamed him) and I spent a nice weekend chatting and exploring the place apart from running the first away stage of the "A-run-a-town world tour" :)
Monday the 13th I've attended Guido's wedding, nice chance to meet some of my former colleagues and, obviously, to eat wonderful food.
Last but not least, tonight Moysa will play live again after the summer break, we will be at Mama's.
